”Delighting in one another” | 1 Thessalonians 3:6-13 | Malcolm Cox
Tuesday Feb 14, 2023
Tuesday Feb 14, 2023
Delighting in one another : Who or what do we delight in?
Let’s see what we can learn from this passage…..'...distress (anankē) being basically ‘the choking, pressing care’, and persecution (thlipsis) ‘the crushing trouble’ (Lightfoot).' TyndaleAs if his life has been on hold until this news arrived. In a time without rapid communication it must have been hard to be in the dark for so long.‘night and day’: He works night and day 1 Thessalonians 2:9 and he prays night and day. '...one gets the impression of a man struggling to put into words a feeling too deep for words.' Tyndale‘come to you’: His heart is to be with them. He wants relationship, not just communication. Email and other messaging can never substitute for presence. Let us never be content with virtual presence. Timothy's visit has encouraged him, but it has not satiated his desire to be with them in person.Faith, love - connection with holiness
QUESTION: What are some of the reasons we can and should delight in one another? How delight in one another?
1. Speak of faith and loveWe need faith and love - help each other with thisFaith - 5 mentions in chapter
'joy in the presence' - a powerful picture. Paul holds the Thessalonians in God's presence. Perhaps in memory, or prayer. Tells us something of Paul's relationship with God.
2. Pray for one anotherPaul’s prayers make a difference“May God - framed in God
Note:'you' - plural 17 times in this section‘we’, ‘us’ - 10‘our - 3.
ConclusionJesus died for his friends, Jn 15:13 - people he delights in

Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
Introduction, v1Paul’s emotional state because suffering mentioned 2:14ff“We could stand it not longer”What kinds of things make you say something like, “I can’t stand it any longer!”?What are the things, as a Christian, that make you act because you can ‘stand it no longer’?
Faith gets stronger when we get upset
Faith gets stronger when we actA. SacrificeSending TimothyRiots last timeJealous Jews unlikely to be any less jealousTravel; time; energy
B. RiskWhat if it does not work / rejected?Outcome uncertainIn the end this is our faith in action
ApplicationsPray for one anotherTake action to strengthen and encourage on anotherDo so because of love, gently and with compassionDo not charge in, but do not stand by and watchSpeak truth: “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body.” (Ephesians 4:25 NIV11)
Conclusion, v5We have an opponentNot to be feared, but respectedJesus cared and acted - personal sacrifice for us…..“When God could stand it no longer…”

”Supporting those who Suffer” | 1 Thess 2:13-20 | Malcolm Cox
Tuesday Jan 24, 2023
Tuesday Jan 24, 2023
Introduction, vv13
1. How to handle suffering, vv13-16 A. Fallen world B. Some prefer darkness C. How we grow
2. How to handle it when people we love suffer, vv17-20 A. We feel their pain B. We make significant efforts C. We trust God
Conclusion, vv19-20
“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19 NIV11)
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2–4 NIV11)
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1–3 NIV11)
